Just as sword and neck are about to meet, a fireball comes hurtling across the valley.

Faster than lightning and more dazzling than the sun. It hits the beast in the side and its fur turns into a flaming inferno. The enormous body is thrown aside and lands on the glowing ground.

"I had it," Agimi says to the magician Ziym, who is looking up from behind a thicket of bushes.
"I know," Ziym replies, and laughter echoes dryly across the plain. "But I got it."
Agimi's gaze, which had made dragons recoil, softens. "Now we'll get that treasure!" The two friends quickly rush the last path towards the Fire Tower. All that remains of the beast is a pile of ash that the wind has soon spread across the valley...

My Father's Sword is played just like any other role-playing game, and you can pretty much take any adventure you want and play it with these rules.
Make sure it doesn't get too serious, and take your time. Seriously! Think “The Princess Bride” and “Discworld” rather than “Lord of the Rings”. The game should therefore be played with a large dose of humor and distance, and the characters should be epic, but comical, Heroes.

The players play epic heroes whose abilities are unmatched (at some things, they are truly abysmal at others). These heroes could be inspired by classic characters from the books and movies we all know and love, or by a character you have played before.

This book is 40 pages, most of which are dedicated to character creation, the rules are explained in just a few pages. And, well… that’s pretty much it.

This book introduces Nordic Skald’s own game engine which it calls “Basic Eight”. Despite being very basic (hence the name), the rules are completely complete and are sufficient for you to be able to play an epic adventure. The characters have no basic abilities, instead there are only eight skills (again, hence the name): Physical activity, Social interaction, Knowledge, Mental strength, Perception, Combat, Magic and Punishment.

My Father's Sword is a game where you really embrace all the clichés that exist in the fantasy genre, and give yourself a real nostalgia trip. Try to recreate that feeling you got when you picked up your first role-playing game and really let the nostalgia and your memories make you do all the things you thought were so-cool back then. When you play My Father's Sword, you are finally rewarded for doing clichéd things!

In this game, the focus is entirely on the narrative drive, not on slowing down the game with rule questions, numbers or flipping through the book. The game is designed so that players and SL are given tools to tell a fun story in a simple, casual and exciting way.
